  • MIUR – PRIN 2015 Project- “Others’ Italy. Geographies and governance of immigration between territorial embeddedness and transnational networks”: partecipation in working group  coordinated by Monica Meini, University of  Molise (36 months).
  • University Research Project (PRA 2016) – Reenacting the past: cultural memory and territorial identities (Coordinator: Fabio Dei, Department of Civilisations and Knowledge Forms, University of Pisa) (12 months).
  • Project on “Knowledge and innovation” (April 2014): representative for the Department of Civilisations and Knowledge Forms in agreement with the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna for a research project funded by the Municipality of Pisa regarding the attraction potentialities of Pisa for new high-tech investments.
  • Project on high-tech chains in Tuscany (February – November 2011; February – June 2012): representative for the Department of Human and Environmental Sciences in agreement with the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna for the analysis of the main high-tech chains (funded by Toscana Promozione – Region of Tuscany).
  • Project of the Foundation Savings Bank of Lucca (Announcement 2011): “Manufacturing and Services: scenarios and perspectives of the industry in the Lucca area” (Coordinator: Daniele Dalli, University of Pisa) (11 months).
  • RE.TUR.N project Touristic ports and shipbuilding in Tuscany (2009-2011): collaboration with the Department of Business Administration (Coordinator: Iacopo Cavallini) in order to set up an analysis of the geographic dimension of the shipbuilding sector in Tuscany.
  • Project on “The valorisation of research activities in Tuscany” (June – September 2008): collaboration with the Irpet for the analysis concerning the evolution of the university and of the territorial effects of the research activities.
  • MIUR – PRIN 2007 Project – “The cosmopolitan city. Contact zones, flows, geographies” (National Coordinator: Vincenzo Guarrasi, University of Palermo) – Local research group: “Actors, relations, places in the multicultural city” (Local coordinator: Gisella Cortesi, University of Pisa) (24 months).
  • Project of the Foundation Savings Bank of Lucca (Announcement 2007): “The soundscape and the territorial analysis. Survey on Puccini’s locations in the Lucca Province and ideas for the Territorial Development Plan” (Coordinator: Gisella Cortesi, University of Pisa) (12 months).
  • Project INTERREG III A IT-FR “Islands” (Consorzio Pisa Ricerche) (2005-2007) – “Integrated analysis of the coastal system: geomorphological, climate, vegetational and anthropic aspects.   • Project of the Comune of San Giuliano (15 April – 15 July 2004): collaboration with the Consorzio Pisa Ricerche in order to undertake an analysis on the economic and territorial dynamics of the Comune of San Giuliano.
  • Project CNR Young Researchers – “Promotion of research 2004″: “New technologies for new industrial spaces: the impact of technological innovation on the territorial distribution of the economic activities and on the formation and development of the technological districts” (Research Line: The cultural identity as an integration factor) (Scientific coordinator) (24 months).
  • Project “Analysis of the regional policy for technological innovation and reinforcement of the high-tech area in Tuscany, with the perspectives and techniques of policy analysis” (1 April 2002 – 31 July 2002): collaboration with the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna for research activities on the state of the art concerning innovation policies in Italy and more specifically in Tuscany (project funded by the Toscana Region).
  • Observatory of high-tech firms in the Pisa Province (April 2002): collaboration with the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna for the research activities on technological districts and planning of a survey on the high-tech activitis operating in the Pisa area (project funded by UE and Pisa Province).

  • Project Link (Plan of reinforcement of territorial R&D Networks) (1 January 1999 – 12 October 2001), coordinated by the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna and funded by MIUR: research activity, scientific and training planning, support to the coordination in two specific projects of the Plan: P1 – “Research on models and methodologies for advanced services and training”, with particular attention to WP1 phase “Territorial Analysis”; P6 – “Tools and training methodologies for the development of competences aimed at supporting promotional projects of territorial innovation”.

  • Project Valdera (November 1998 – Juin 1999): collaboration with the Innovation Center for the study on the “Definition of scenarios of economic and territorial integration and feasibility study of an innovative system of connection infrastructure in the Valdera area (project funded by Alta Valdera Municipalities).
  • Editorial project “Local Development and industrial policy” (15 November 1998 – 28 February 1999): collaboration with the Laboratory of Economic Regional Policy of Bologna to write a paper about the main theories and practices in the local development.
  • “Economic Conference of the Pisa area” (February 1998 – May 1998): collaboration woth the Innovation Center and the Municipality of Pisa to prepare a relation “Innovation and R&S activities in the Pisa area”.
  • Project “Territorial Marketing in the Pisa and Livorno provinces” (2 May 1997 – 31 January 1998): collaboration with the Innovation Center to realize theoretical and empirical research about territorial marketing and to study their applications in the Pisa and Livorno areas.
  • Coordinated project CNR 1997-1999 – “Cultural, social and environmental aspects of urban change of coastal areas in the Mediterranean” (National Coordinator: Gisella Cortesi, University of Pisa), Local Unit “Cultural aspects or urban change in the Mediterranean areas” (Local coordinator: Gisella Cortesi, University of Pisa) (grant n. 98.0184.CT15 – 36 months).
  • European Project Tetris (12 March 1997 – 31 December 1997): collaboration with the Innovation Center to analyse the availability of technologies, patents and European projects of the Universities in Tuscany.

  • Project Emilia Romagna (2 December 1996 – 31 March 1997): collaboration with Ervet – Policies for enterprises (Bologna) to undertake statistic and cartographic elaborations and analysis of the main socio-economic variables in Emilia Romagna.
  • Project CNR 1995-1997 “Anthropic aspects of global change: the Mediterranean region” (National Coordinator: Berardo Cori, University of Pisa) – Local Unit “Urban change and its interconnections with the environment in the Mediterranean area” (Local coordinator: Gisella Cortesi, University of Pisa) (grant n. 96.03561.CT15 – 36 months).
  • Project “Economic and employment valorisation of cultural and environmental resources of the Livorno Province” (November-December 1994): collaboration with the Innovation Center and coordination of Prof. Marinella Pasquinucci, University of Pisa.
  • Project of feasibility of a scientific and technological park in North-Western Tuscany (September 1992 – November 1994): collaboration with the Innovation Center and the Pisa Province to realize research activities on the scientific and technological parks in Europe.

International

  • Visit to the Universidad Politecnica Salesiana in Ecuador (Cuenca, Guayaquil e Quito) for a research on the role of universities in developing countries (April 2017).
  • Stay for study period in London (participation to the Triple Helix Conference) and in Oxford (contacts with ISIS Innovation of the Oxford University) about the subject of knowledge cities (July 2013).
  • Stay for study in Boston and visit of some research centres and high-tech firms, finalised towards the examination of territorial factors which have allowed the increasing concentration of innovative activities (August 2012).
  • Stay for study period in London and contacts with Prof. Helene Lawton Smith (School of Management – Birbeck University of London and Department of Geography and Environment – University of Oxford) about the role of the university in regional development (September 2011).
  • Scientific tour in China, in particular in Chongqing on the topics of the industrial location and of Chinese urban development and in Shanghai for the notion of cosmopolitan city and technological development (March – April 2009).
  • Stay for study period in Berkeley and visit of research centres and high-tech firms in San Francisco and in Silicon Valley (August – September 2007).
  • Stay for study period in the Valinco Gulf area (Corse) and collaboration with the Université de Corse and with IFREMER – Laboratoire Provence Azur Corse  for the realisation of a direct survey for the evaluation of human pressure on coastal areas (INTERREG III A IT-FR “Island” (July-August 2006).
  • Scientific tour of Mumbai and Bangalore (India) about the issue of the high-tech development in India and about economic, social and environmental changes of Bangalore city (April 2006). Meetings and interviews at these universities: Indian Institute of Technology (ITT), Mumbai; Institute of Management Development & Research, Mumbai; National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai; Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.
  • Stay for study period in Brighton (UK) and visit to Oxford to collect data and information about the role of the university in the urban development dynamics in order to make a comparison with the case of Pisa (June – July 2003).
  • Collaboration with the IGU (International Geographical Union) Commission– Gender and Geography for the organisation of International Conference in “Gendered cities: identities, activities – a life course approach (May-June 2003).
  • Stay for study period in Brighton (June-July 1995), during the Phd finalised at enhancing the analysis of the issue “Innovation and territory”.
  • Meeting at the Universitè de Nice-Sophia Antipolis with Prof. André Dauphiné (1994) for the definition of methods for the analysis of land use in coastal areas.
  • Erasmus scholarship for degree thesis at the University of Le Mans and Angers about high-tech phenomenon (July – September 1991).

  • Agei Working Group: “Geography of innovation and infomation”: coordinator of the group activities with Monica Morazzoni, IULM University of Milan (September 2016 to present).
  • Regional Observatory of high-tech firms, coordinated by Toscana Unioncamere and Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna: participation in a work group for the methodologies of identification for the spatial distribution of high-tech sectors.
  • Interuniversity Centre of Territorial Sciences (CIST) of Tuscan universities: member of the Scientific Committee of the Centre for the Department of Human and Environment Sciences of the University of Pisa (2010-2012).
  • Regional Observatory of Research and Innovation, coordinated by Regione Toscana and IRPET (July 2009 – July 2010): participation in a work Group of the University of Pisa for the analysis of contracts and collaborations between the universities and external institutions.
  • Collaboration with the Italian Geographical Society and contribution to the 2008 Report about “L’Italia delle città. Tra malessere e trasfigurazione”, edited by Giuseppe Dematteis of Politecnico di Torino (part on the Knowledge City).
  • Partecipation in a work group AGEI “Gender and Geography”, coordinated first by prof. Gisella Cortesi, then by prof. Marcella Schmidt di Friedberg of the University Bicocca (Milan), conducting research activities about the regional differences of the women’s participation in science and high technology.
  • Work group on “The industrial landscape in Italy”, coordinated by Sergio Conti of University of Turin within the CNR Strategic Project “The landscape in Italy”: analysis of the industrial landscape of Pontedera: collaboration with Monica Meini (2005-2006).
  • Italian Network IGU (International Geographical Union) and Work Group AGEI “Geography of the Information Society”: participation since 2005 in the work group, coordinated by prof. Maria Paradiso, with particular attention to the relationship between communication technologies and processes of knowledge creation and dissemination.
  • Work Group on “The heritages of the industrial history”, coordinated by Sergio Conti of the University of Turin within CNR Project “Cultural Heritage”: participation in the research group and realization of the case of Pontedera with Monica Meini (1999-2001).
